Should You Buy a Biometric or Locking Safe?
Many gun safes sport popular Biometric locking systems, but should you buy a Biometric or Locking safe?
Before you answer, there are many factors to consider.
What will you use it for? How much security do you need? Is cost a significant part of the plan for you?
Looking at the features of each will help determine if biometrics are the best fit for your needs.

Biometrics v. Locking Explained
The feature that defines a biometric safe or a locking safe is how the safe is accessed.

With a locking safe, you will get into the safe using a keypad, combination, or keyed lock. Some locking safes combine two lock styles.

A biometric safe uses technology to read your fingerprints with a scanning pad to unlock the safe. Which makes you wonder…

How Reliable are Biometric Gun Safes?
Biometric safes are very reliable.

Using your fingerprint or palm image, a Biometric system saves the imprint as a digital numbered code. If the fingerprint sensed by the lock is not the same, the digital code will not match and the safe will not open.

When faced with an emergency, you may be dealing with some serious fight or flight adrenaline. The reliability to be able to open the gun safe with a simple touch is a huge advantage to success.

Peace of mind is a big advantage in this aspect. You can be confident that no one else is going to be able to access your weapons, accessories, or other valuables you have secured.

Locking safes are vulnerable to someone being able to crack the combination or gain access with a misplaced key. No such trouble with biometrics!

Benefit Of Using A Biometric Gun Safe
The benefit of using a biometric gun safe is lightning speed access with the added security of only authorized users being able to open the gun safe.

Many of us prefer to keep a gun close at hand within our sleeping quarters for self-defense. If you are in a situation where getting to your gun is needed in a hurry, fumbling with locks is the last thing you want to do.

The touch-and-go method of a biometric gun safe can be a big advantage in emergencies. Faster access for emergencies

Imagine you are sleeping, and suddenly roused by the sounds of an intruder. With a biometric safe there is no need to remember a code. No need to find and fumble with a key.

You need your gun. Touch. Bam. You’ve got it in hand.

Security in seconds.
Disadvantages Of Using A Biometric Gun Safe
There are a few disadvantages to gun safes to be aware of as well.
With many biometric gun safes, only one user has access to the safe. Newer models are adding the ability to add multiple users. Some time spent in set-up programming the adults that you want to give access to is possible with the latest technology.
Overall, biometric gun safes are significantly more expensive than locking gun safes. In this category, it’s like comparing a screwdriver to a cordless drill. They both get the same job done, but one has a lot more technology and working parts than the other.
One more factor to consider, being an electronic device makes the biometric gun safes reliant on their power source to function.
In answer to being vulnerable to power loss, many biometric safes also have the option of keyed or combination locking as a backup.
Regular checks of batteries are all that is needed to make sure that your safe is waiting ready.
My Verdict?
I think a biometric gun safe is a great asset to have for safe self-defense storage.
The fast access, and added security of knowing that I’m the only one who can get to my gun, is very important to me.
There are also many great reasons to have locking safes for other uses and locations securing my best firearms and accessories, as well as my valuables.
Safe storage and staging can vary, so when you are deciding if you should buy a biometric or locking safe just give some thought to what will work best for you.
Biometrics is a great advancement to the technology of safely securing our firearms.
The bottom line here: I’m very glad we have the option for firearm storage!
The 6 Best Biometric Gun Safe

- Awesafe Gun Safe: Best for the Budget
- BARSKA Biometric Fingerprint Safe AX11224: Best Biometric Wall Safe

1. GunVault SpeedVault Biometric Handgun Safe SVB500: Best Biometric Gun Safe
One of the most popular light-duty biometric safes on the market today is GunVault’s SVB500 SpeedVault Gun Safe.
Built to meet the balance between keeping my home and kids safe, there are a lot of things to consider when I was evaluating this unique gun storage offering.

Does this biometric safe fit the bill for my home?
Let’s see.
Accessibility
To start, the SpeedVault is lightning quick to get into when I need access to my weapon.

A two-second acceptance rate on the fingerprint scan opens the drawer for gun access in a blink. A big part of this ease is the ability to make 120 fingerprint scans in set up.

No, it’s not made with the intention of dozens of people being allowed to have access. Rather, the high scan number is there so that I could scan the same fingers in multiple ways.

No matter which angle I hit the sensors with my fingertips, I’ve got a scan to match and it will open.

A backup security key does come with the SpeedVault Safe, so if there is some sort of failure with the scans (which I never encountered) you still have access the good old-fashioned way.

There is also a beep function to alert when the safe is opened. I like that feature, as it reassures me to know I can hear when it’s opened. If you want a stealthier operation, it’s easy to mute the beep.
Functionality
The function of the SpeedVault Biometric safe is reliable and easy to use.

A drop-down drawer works with gravity instead of springs or openers to keep the action simple and more reliable.

An unexpected simplicity in an electronic safe, less mechanical bits to break are always a good thing in my book!

Another huge plus with the functionality is the way the SpeedVault safe keeps your handgun in a ready position.

My gun is stored with the grip towards me in an easy to reach way that makes for a natural movement from being stored to being in hand and ready to shoot.
Since this gun storage option has such a unique storage function, my accessories or other valuables are better suited to the armory.
Flexible Safe Storage
With many placement options, the SpeedVault can be used as safe storage in many different locations.
Mine is mounted to my nightstand to ensure I’m ready for home defense while I’m sleeping. The mounting screws provided are wood screws, which was just what I needed.
If you are thinking to install it onto plaster or drywall, you’ll need to run to the hardware store.
The safe weighs around 6.5 lbs, just heavier than a sack of flour. So if the wood surface you are mounting to is on the thin side, you may want to add a supporting layer of wood on the inside of your cabinet.

Capacity
The SpeedVault Biometric gun safe is intended for use with most mid-sized semi-auto handguns.
The steel safe has an exterior dimension of 6” x 3.5” x 13”. The foam-lined interior dimensions are roughly 2.5” x 6” x 8.5” and allows for most pistols with a length that is 8” or less.

Not intended for large revolvers or long-barrelled guns, this is my personal carry weapon security point. When I’m done with my Glock 22 for the day, I can stow it within the SpeedVault without any trouble.
My larger weapons, like my favorite Ruger 10-22, are kept in one of my full-sized long gun safes.
My Verdict
The bottom line for the GunVault SpeedVault Biometric Handgun Safe SVB500 is that this is an excellent way to store my handgun.
Reliable function and so easy to use, the ready-to-grip storage position ensures I am always prepared to defend my home.
For your home defense, GunVault has once again provided a top-shelf choice to keep your children and your home safe with this light-duty gun storage option.

- For handguns
- Exterior dimensions: 6.5 inch high x 3.5 inch wide x 13 inch depth
- Interior dimensions: 2.75 inch high x 5.75 inch wide x 8.5 inch depth
2. Awesafe Gun Safe: Best for the Budget
The Awesafe Gun Safe is a budget-friendly and secure biometric safe.
It provides you with three different modes of access, allowing you to quickly get to your firearms no matter what, and is lightweight and compact enough to store essentially anywhere.
Just how much security does this small, value-priced safe provide?
Let’s find out!

Build
The Awesafe Gun Safe is made of 13-gauge solid steel, with a coating on top.
The door is pry-resistant with precise fittings meant to prevent any prying open with hand tools.

It’s not 100% theft-proof, as someone with enough time and the right tools could get in eventually, but it does provide enough security to keep your kids or any other unauthorized users out!

The door also features a gas strut opening system, which allows it to swing open quickly and quietly for discrete, fast access to your firearms.

You can mount the safe to a floor, table, or wall (using two included lug bolts) through two pre-drilled holes in the bottom.

Overall, the safe seems to be very solidly built and offers excellent quality for the price.
Interior
The interior measures 2.2”x9.7”x6.7” (HWD), and it includes a thick foam padding to protect your handguns from damage.

The safe also features interior blue LED lighting, allowing you to see and grab your firearms without any additional lighting.

Access
There are three different ways to access the interior: through the biometric fingerprint scanner, the digital keypad, or one of the two included emergency backup keys.

The fingerprint recognition system works very well, and you can easily get inside with a single scan.
It can retain up to 30 different fingerprints at once, allowing you to input multiple fingers or multiple different angles to ensure quick, reliable access each and every time.

You might notice that, right out of the box, the safe can be opened with any fingerprint.
This isn’t a malfunction! It’ll happen until you program in your own fingerprint.
After that, you’ll only be able to open the safe through the scanner if your fingerprint is registered.
You can also set a 4 digit code, using the digital keypad, as a second mode of access.

The keypad is very responsive, but it does only allow for 30 different combinations.
So, given enough time, the code could be guessed by an intruder.
In the event that your safe’s batteries die at an inopportune time, you can still access the contents through the emergency backup key.
The included directions are very easy to understand, and as long as you follow them, it should take you no longer than five minutes to set your code and input your fingerprint.

The gas-strut system opens the door just about a second after you scan your fingerprint or input your code, ensuring consistent quick access.
The keypad and scanner run on four AA batteries, and the safe includes a low battery indicator light to let you know when it’s time to change them.

Size
The exterior of the safe measures 3.2”x12.1”x9.9” (HWD), and it weighs approximately 10 lbs.

It can store two standard-sized concealed carry pistols, or one larger pistol with an extra magazine, pellets, or ammo.
I use mine to store a Glock 19, two magazines, and a small box of ammo, and never have any problems closing it!

The compact, lightweight design makes it ideal for use as a bedside or car safe.
Price
The Awesafe gun safe is available for around $129 online.
It comes with four AA batteries, mounting hardware, and a one-year original factory warranty.
This is a high-quality safe that comes at a value price, and you won’t find a better biometric safe for less than this one!

Is the Awesafe Gun Safe Worth it?
The Awesafe Gun Safe is surprisingly high-quality and secure for the price.
It’s designed to provide protection and keep unauthorized users out away from your firearms while still providing quick, consistent access, and it’s perfect for this purpose.

3. BARSKA Biometric Fingerprint Safe AX11224: Best Biometric Wall Safe
The BARSKA Biometric Fingerprint Safe AX11224 is the best biometric wall safe available.
It provides plenty of interior space for storing multiple handguns, it’s very durably built, and it gives you consistent, quick access to the contents!
Can the BARSKA AX11224 deter burglary attacks and keep your firearms secure, despite its low price?
Let’s find out!
Build
The AX11224 is constructed with very durable 14-gauge steel. It has tamper-resistant edges and is unlocked via two motorized, steel deadbolts that provide optimum security.

The door is 3/16” thick and the walls are 1/16” thick. It would be nice if the walls were a bit thicker, but I’d still say it’s decently secure. It’s even DOJ-approved for firearm storage, meaning it’s passed pry, saw, drop, and pick tests to protect against theft.
You can mount the safe through pre-drilled holes, using the hardware that’s included. It’s mountable practically anywhere, including on the wall, on the floor, or in a cabinet.

It runs on four AA batteries that have a lifespan of about 10,000 scans.
There is also a battery indicator beep that lets you know when the batteries are running low. If you want to use your safe discreetly, you have the option to turn this beep off.
It’s very simple – all you have to do is press and hold the initialization button until the lights flash green, and then release the initialization button.

Although it’s not fireproof, it is still very well-built and durable. You can expect the AX11224 to last for a very long time.

Interior
The interior dimensions of this safe are 6.9”x16.4”x12.25” (HWD), which gives you .79 cubic ft. of storage. It also includes a floor mat to protect your pistols against damage and scuffing.
There’s just one single compartment, but still plenty of interior space. You have enough room to store several handguns, along with some extra ammo or important papers.

Access
You’ll be able to access the contents of your safe through a biometric fingerprint scanner.

It’s easy to program and can hold up to 120 different fingerprints, so I’d recommend scanning a few different fingers at multiple angles to ensure quick access every time.
The scanner is accurate and fast, giving you access within 2.5 seconds of scanning your fingerprint.
Once you’ve grabbed your hunting pack and laced up your hunting boots, a quick scan of your finger is all you’ll need to grab your pistol and go!
Under the factory settings, the safe will beep if you leave the door open too long.
This, however, can be disabled just like the battery indicator beep.
The biometric scanner provides better performance than digital keypad, manual key, or combination unlocking methods.
You shouldn’t have any issues using the scanner, because it’s very consistent and reliable.
But, if you do, BARSKA includes two emergency backup keys with the AX11224.

Size
The dimensions of the safe measure 8”x16.5”x14.6” (HWD), and it weighs approximately 30 lbs.
This gives you enough space to store your handguns, and it’s relatively easy to move if you ever need to relocate it.

The light weight, however, also makes it easier for thieves to steal if it isn’t mounted. For best results, make sure to mount it on your wall before storing anything important inside.

Price
The BARSKA AX11224 retails for around $250. This price includes:
- The safe
- Mounting hardware
- 2 emergency backup heys
- An emergency backup battery pack
- 4 AA batteries
For the price, you won’t find a more reliable or better quality biometric safe. BARSKA is known for their high-quality manufacturing, and they even include a one year warranty to give you better peace of mind!
Is the BARSKA Biometric Fingerprint Safe AX11224 Worth it?
The BARSKA Biometric Fingerprint AX11224 is easy to set up, user-friendly, and provides the security you need for peace of mind having firearms in your home.

4. Barska Top Opening BioMetric Safe AX11556: Best Drawer Safe
The BARSKA Top Opening Biometric Safe AX11556 is the best safe for storing your firearms in a drawer.
The unique top-opening design, low weight, and smaller dimensions make it very easy to discreetly store in a dresser, desk, or file cabinet drawer.

But, does it provide the security you need at such a low price? And how reliable is the fingerprint scanner?
Let’s find out!
Build
The AX11556 is made with solid 16-gauge steel and features a dual hydraulic-assisted top door opening system.

The door is 3/16” thick, and the walls are 1/16” thick. It’s unlocked with two steel, motorized deadbolts, which prevents any unauthorized access.
Like other biometric BARSKA safes, it features tamper-resistant, pry-proof edges. It’s also drop, pick, and saw-resistant.

You can easily mount the safe in large drawers, or even in the floor, through three pre-drilled holes in the bottom with included mounting hardware.

The top opening design makes it perfect for drawer, file cabinet, and nightstand storage.
It’s powered by four AA batteries, which will last up to two years depending on how often you access the inside through the scanner.

Interior
The interior space measures 3”x14.56”x11.19” (HWD), which gives you .23 cubic ft. of storage space.

If you need to hold the long guns and rifles needed for turkey hunting, or large Bushmaster XM15-E2S optics, go with a larger safe. This space gives you just enough room to hold two handguns with extra magazines for each.

There’s no interior light included, so you might want to add one for easy access in the dark.

There is a floor mat included to provide some protection against scuffing and damage, but no internal padding.
Access
The primary mode of access is a biometric fingerprint scanner.

It’s easy to program following the instructions in the manual, and you can store up to 120 different prints on the scanner.
I’d recommend saving multiple fingers at several different angles to ensure a 100% unlocking rate, no matter how you place your finger on the scanner.

It takes just about 2.5 seconds to access your firearms. All you have to do is push the activation button, hold your finger to the scanner, and you should be inside in no time!
The biometric scanning system also makes it very easy to operate in the dark – you don’t need to remember the placement of buttons on a keypad, and you don’t need to fumble around for a keyhole.
There is a door alarm that will emit a loud beep if the safe is left open for longer than 3-5 minutes. There’s also a low battery warning alarm that lets you know when the batteries are running low, but these beeps are pretty loud!
There’s an optional silent mode, which I’d recommend using for discretion.

The scanner is very reliable, but if you ever have any problems with it, BARSKA includes two backup keys for manual access through a keyhole hidden behind the BARSKA logo.

Size
The overall dimensions of the AX11556 measure 5”x14.81”x11.5” (HWD), and it weighs just over 20 lbs.
This is a compact, convenient size perfect for drawer storage. The top-opening design gives it a low profile, as well.
Price
You can purchase the AX11556 online for around $260. This price includes the safe, two backup keys, mounting hardware, and BARSKA’s one-year limited warranty.
For a relatively inexpensive safe, it functions very reliably and gives you peace of mind knowing your belongings are securely hidden inside.

Is the BARSKA Top Opening Biometric Safe AX11556 Worth it?
The BARSKA Top Opening Biometric Safe AX11556 is durable, sturdy, and conveniently-sized for drawer storage.
It’s great for long-term storage and keeping unauthorized users away from your handguns, including any small children in your home.

- Advanced Biometric Security - Biometric home safes provide advanced protection through 2.5-sec access via fingerprint recognition, ensuring that only authorized individuals can enter.
- Built to Withstand - These safes are meticulously crafted with robust materials, designed not only to safeguard your valuables but also to resist tampering and unauthorized entry attempts effectively.

5. Vaultek Safe VT20i: Best Biometric Handgun Safe
The Vaultek VT20i safe is the best biometric handgun safe.
The lightweight, compact design makes it perfect for traveling or discreet storage, and its smartphone compatibility makes updating your preferences and accessing the contents incredibly simple!

The only question is: is it worth the slightly higher price?

Let’s find out!
Build
As part of Vaultek’s 20 Series Smart Safe line, the VT20i features a ton of advanced anti-theft features:

- Anti-pry bars
- Dual anti-impact latches
- Bolstered interior hinges

The anti-pry bars are made even more effective by the tight, pry-resistant frame. There’s not even enough space to put a piece of cardstock between the gap!

You can easily mount the VT20i to a nightstand, desk, or inside your vehicle with the included mounting hardware and the 4 ft, heavy-duty steel security cable.

The rugged unibody is constructed with highly-durable 16-gauge carbon steel, with a durable powder coat on top to prevent corrosion.

While it’s unfortunately not fire or waterproof, it’s very durable and even features an auto-open lid for one-handed access.
Interior
The interior dimensions of the Vaultek VT20i measure 2”x11”x5.75” (HWD). This gives you enough space to store one standard-sized handgun plus a couple of extra magazines, ammo, or ear protection.

The interior is padded with a thick layer of foam to prevent damage to the contents, and it even includes automatic, adjustable LED interior lighting! This light will automatically turn off after 10 seconds.

Access
There are a whopping four different ways to access the inside of your VT20i:
- Biometric scanner
- Digital keypad
- Smartphone app
- Manual key

Let’s talk about the biometric scanner first.
It features a quick access, high resolution fingerprint scanning mechanism that can hold up to 20 different fingerprints at one time.

The downside? It’s not 100% reliable.
It’ll sometimes take a couple of tries to get it open using the scanner, which isn’t exactly ideal for high-stress situations.
Thankfully, there are three other ways to open the safe, should the biometric scanner fail.

The most reliable access method? The digital keypad.
It’s auto-illuminating, thanks to the built-in proximity sensor that lights up the second it detects your hand near the keypad.

You can choose any combination between 4-8 digits, giving you over 40,000 possibilities for an access code!

After six incorrect entries, the digital keypad will lock for four minutes as a security measure.

It also features several different “hotkeys,” which allow you to make changes like turning the sound (alarms and keypad beeps) and bluetooth compatibility on or off.
One of the Vaultek VT20i’s most unique features is its smartphone compatibility.
The smartphone app is highly interactive, and lets you do things like:
- Check the battery level
- Detect tampering
- View access history
- Turn stealth (quiet) mode on/off
- Adjust the brightness of the LED lights
- Manage your saved fingerprints
This technology makes it incredibly easy to customize your safe and quickly fix any programming errors.
The biometric scanner, digital keypad, and bluetooth compatibility all run on a rechargeable lithium battery. This will power the safe continuously for 4-6 months, depending on how often you use it.

It charges in just 2.5 hours with the included micro-USB charging kit.
If you’d prefer, the safe can be plugged in continuously to ensure an endless battery life.
Should all three of the primary access modes fail, Vaultek also includes two backup manual keys that fit in a concealed keyhole.
Size
The exterior of the safe measures 2.75”x11.5”x9” (HWD), and it weighs just over 7 lbs.

It’s easily portable, TSA compliant, and slim enough to fit pretty much anywhere, meaning it’s a great option for a car or travel safe as well!

Price
The VT20i sells for around $270 online.

Along with the safe, you get:
- 2 spare keys
- A micro USB cable
- An AC power adapter
- A rechargeable battery
- A steel security cable
- Mounting hardware

It’s a little more than some similar models, but still relatively affordable and worth the price.

Is the Vaultek VT20i Worth it?
If you’re looking for a high-quality, durable gun safe that’s biometric, the Vaultek VT20i is a great choice.

It’s easy to transport, has a great battery life, and with four different modes of access, you should never have an issue getting inside!

6. SentrySafe QAP1BE Gun Safe: Fastest Quick Access Safe
The SentrySafe QAP1BE Gun Safe is the fastest quick access safe you’ll find.
It’s pretty small, so it’s not fit for the long rifles with lights and optics attached that you need for coyote or drone hunting, but it will hold one to two handguns with no problem.

The only question is: is it secure enough?
Let’s find out!
Build
The QAP1BE is made of durable 12-gauge steel and features a pry-resistant door for added strength and security.

The steel won’t corrode or rust easily, meaning it’s relatively waterproof and will last for years to come.
There is a bit of a gap between the door and the wall, so a determined thief may be able to access the inside, given enough time and effort.

However, it will definitely prevent your kids or other unauthorized users from getting into your guns!
The door is powered by a compression gas strut that opens the top door quietly and holds it open for single-handed access.

It can be mounted to the floor, a table, or on the wall through holes on the bottom with the included hardware, which I’d recommend for increased security and theft protection!
Interior
The interior dimensions of the QAP1BE measure 2.2”x9.7”x6.7” (HWD), giving you .08 cubic ft. of storage space.

You can fit a standard-sized handgun with an extra magazine inside, or possibly two compact size handguns!

The inside is padded with foam to prevent any scratches or damage to your pistol.

There isn’t an interior light, so you might want to add one if you want to be able to easily access the contents in the dark.
Access
There are three different ways to get inside your safe:
- Through the biometric fingerprint scanner
- Through the digital keypad
- Or with the manual override backup keys
The fingerprint scanner is incredibly responsive and accurate. I’ve never had any issues with it opening on the first try, even with my finger at different angles!
You can program two different fingerprints into the scanner, so you could add in two of your own fingerprints, or one of yours and one of another authorized user.

To use the scanner, you just touch it to bring it out of sleep mode, and then slide your finger across the reader. It’ll open within just one second of doing so.
If the scanner does fail on you, you can also use the digital keypad. All you have to do is press one key to bring it out of sleep mode, and then enter one of the two codes you can set!
If the batteries run out, or if both modes of access somehow fail, you can always use one of the two emergency backup keys provided by SentrySafe.

Both the scanner and the keypad are 100% silent for discreet access, and run on four AA batteries.

The battery life can be a bit short (two months on average), so use high-quality, name-brand batteries for the longest life possible.
The scanner and keypad are both very easy to set up and operate, and the three different unlocking modes ensure a 100% reliable unlocking rate.
Size
The overall dimensions of the QAP1BE safe measure 3.2”x12.1”x9.9” (HWD), and it weighs just under 12 lbs.

The lightweight, compact size makes it very easy to transport or hide, meaning it could also work well as a car, camping, or truck safe!
Price
You can find this SentrySafe biometric safe online for somewhere around $200.
It’s a good quality safe that comes at a reasonable price, and it includes a one-year limited warranty if anything should go wrong!

Is the SentrySafe QAP1BE Gun Safe Worth it?
Overall, I’m very satisfied with the quality and price of the SentrySafe QAP1BE Gun Safe.

The three unlocking methods make it easy to access in the dark or under duress, but it’s still secure enough to deter all but the most determined of thieves and prevent your children from getting into your guns!
- Biometric gun safe provides secure storage for one standard handgun; Pistol safe with fingerprint scanner for advanced protection
- Pistol safe features a gas strut to instantly and quietly open safe door for single-handed access to your handgun; ideal for use as a bedside gun safe. Capacity - 0.08 cubic feet
- Handgun safe is constructed with solid steel and a pry resistant door for strength and handgun security; manual keypad and override key for back up entry; California DOJ certified gun safe
Now It’s Your Turn
I hope you enjoyed my best biometric gun safe guide.
Now I want to turn it over to you:
Which biometric safe will you pick for your gun?
Let me know by leaving a quick comment down below.
Looking for affordable biometric safe that can be plugged into 110v wall receptacle with battery backup. I am tired of having to monitor battery charge and replacing them. Any recommendations?
Having used your number 1 choice the svb500 and corresponding with gunvault I personally would drop it down your list. Reasoning longevity if it fails after a year go buy another. They are sourced overseas and no repair parts. Having many of the other units throughout are residents they are all performing as stated.
